How can I relax in my art class?

I just started art and design in college, its my first year. I had my first drawing class today and for some reason I felt under so much pressure today in class when we started drawing. Everyone else was able to just draw away and mine was really shit (and im not exaggerating, it was). I’m a good drawer, I don’t know what went wrong with me today. Also I’m used to sitting down and drawing at a table with my music, but in class we have to stand and use easels which im not used too.

So you’re good at drawing at home with the music on and at a desk. That’s good and that’s one skill you’ve now got, so, try thinking about this class as a completely separate thing that’s teaching you a brand new skill.
What I mean by that is try not to let yourself be caught up too much with comparing what you can produce in class against what you do at home. The setting is very different and there is no pressure at home so it’s only natural that you will be able to do better work there. Once you accept the bit of wisdom as being true (and I believe it is) then you won’t feel quite so under pressure. At the moment I’ll bet you didn’t really learn much as you were too worried about the drawing you were doing not being up to scratch. If you can simply admit before you go in that it won’t be as good then everything will be fine as you’ll care less about the finished product but you will pick up some ideas and learn a few things. There will be for instance this nice tip about making hair look more realistic. While the rest of the portrait that day may be rubbish at least you’ll have learnt the hair trick and so the next portrait you do, at home or in class, will be better because of it.
Classes are where you make mistakes and learn from them and nothing is ever a failure if you do learn from it.
