1. The relationship between keywords and your domain:

Keywords are popular words searched on search engines which drive people to your website. For example, if you are selling art supplies on your website consider using keywords such as: paint, brushes, cheap, easels, art supplies, etc.

If you want to be found on the worldwide web, ensure that your domain name and website pages have strong keywords in them, relevant to what you are selling.

2. Is your desired site name taken by someone else?

Make sure that your website name is available by searching for ownership. You may do this at most internet registration services websites. If your desired name is taken by someone else, make sure that the website that you end up buying is not closely related in name to any other website e.g. artbay.com is very similar to the existing ebay.com. If you decide to buy a domain name by a previous owner, ensure that the website was not involved in anything taboo like internet fraud or adult entertainment. If you buy a website that had been black listed by Google, you would have a hard time convincing them that the URL was under new ownership.

The best and most preferred for businesses is of course a dot com website, for example, yourdomainname.com. It is also a good idea to also purchase yourdomain.net and yourdomain.org to make sure that no one tries to compete with your business by using a similar domain name. Yes, you can sue, but that could take thousands of dollars in lawyers’ fees before you even see a settlement.

5. Keep your budget in mind:

Do not spend over zealously on a website domain name without acknowledging your budget. If you find that someone owns the domain name you want, you don’t necessarily need to spend $10,000 to purchase it. Get creative and re-think your website name. Think up a better one and pay a nominal fee for your creativity. Domain names should only cost you between $7 and $10 per month. Save your money for your website design, dedicated server hosting, and marketing costs for your business.
